RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

There are many ways to reconstruct a skin defect. Dr. Sunny Park carefully considers all types of reconstructive methods prior to deciding which is best for each individual patient. The decision is based on location of defect, size of defect and the patient’s own unique anatomy. There are a variety of reconstructive methods that Dr. Park uses including primary closure, local flaps, and grafts.

Recovery after surgery takes about 1 -2 weeks.  All stitches are removed usually 7-10 days after the surgery.  All normal physical activity may be resumed in a week. Bruising and swelling vary greatly from patient to patient.  Ice or cold compresses are applied for the first few days to reduce swelling.

Reconstruction is performed by Dr. Park after the skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma) is removed.  Dr. Park works with many local and regional dermatologists who will typically use the MOHS technique to remove skin cancer.  After removal, the patient will see Dr. Park for the reconstruction. The patient is seen for an initial consult prior to the surgery so that it reconstruction can be coordinated on the same day or shortly thereafter the skin cancer removal.
