Rhinophyma is a condition caused by an overgrowth of oil glands of the nose. It occurs most frequently in older Caucasian males, but can be seen in other races. This condition can result in nasal deformity and can even cause problems breathing in severe cases. When the condition is significant, surgery is required for treatment.

Good candidates are healthy individuals who wish to normalize the appearance of their nose and/or want to alleviate problems breathing caused by the abnormal rhinophyma tissue.  Patients are typically put under “twilight” sedation or general anesthesia for this procedure, but in some situations, it can be done under local anesthesia in the office. The nose is anesthetized, and Dr. Park carefully carves out abnormal tissue to create a normal looking nose. If the rhinophyma is severe, a second surgery may be necessary at a later time to repair the collapsed area of the nose.  Recovery after surgery takes several weeks. The wound needs to be cleaned a few times daily, and the patient is encouraged to avoid any exposure to sunlight during the recovery period.
